Game Design Challenge
MINI-Proposal
Name: Toxic Toss
Tagline: Fold, toss, and survive those that come alive.
Concept Statement: This game is a 2D side scrolling, action survival game where the player will navigate through a paper company building that has been abandoned and taken over by toxic office supply mutations. The main goals of the game will be to avoid obstacles, travel the farthest, collect each golden banana, and get by each level boss. Additionally, there will be a design and test area for your own paper airplane before game use. The player will accomplish these goals by becoming familiar with their paper airplanes limitations and attributes in the beginning test phase. Once the game begins, timing and problem solving will be critical in order to get around obstacles and bosses. Collecting the golden banana on each level will allow you to upgrade your glider once the level is complete.

Description: The core experience of the game should give a creepy abandoned building feel and once you encounter the level bosses you realize the building objects have come alive. The goal will no longer be to just navigate, and problem solve a creepy rundown building but to survive to the end of each level. The player will achieve every goal by following the intended optional sequences in paper airplane testing, banana collection with upgrades, problem solving, and keyboard timing of obstacles. Primary obstacles will be negotiated through timing like a dripping toxic leak from a pipe. Secondary obstacles will have a surprise factor that when you get close to an object something happens, like a jack-in-the-box pops out holding a pair of scissors that tries to slice you or a window blowing open pushing you towards the ground. The starting floor will be easier than the rest and will get harder the more levels you make it too. The third or final fourth floor could have lighting issues making it more difficult to navigate and see certain objects. Each floor will have its own boss at the end of each floor with the first being “Bio Fan Man” one of the simpler bosses to navigate around. The second floor will feature its next boss named “Toxic Jack” who intends to cut your plane in half with its large rusty scissors. Floor three will have its hardest boss yet named “Solar Hazard.” The final floor will be the most difficult, with “Central Air Boss” blowing constant wind and raining down fire orbs the player will have to avoid. This game will take place in a paper supply company, in Scranton Pennsylvania, that calls itself Dunham Morris Paper Supply Company. This company is in a rural area that has gone out of business, the building had to be evacuated because of a radioactive leak under the building. Everything was left in place after the radioactive fallout, leading to the building forming a new life of its own.
Competition: The competition for my game would be other 2D scrolling games like Jet Pack Joyride or Flappy Bird which are primary games on phones but also have arcade versions at establishments like Dave and Busters. Toxic Toss will establish itself differently from those other games because there will be a thought process to moving through each level. Incorporating a biohazard theme into a paper airplane game hasn’t been created before with mini bosses at the end of each floor. This game will bring new and interesting elements to a simplistic game and allow the player to think more than just react. Additionally, being able to test your glider before the game begins will allow the player to gain confidence and enjoy customizing their chosen glider for use. Which is something other games like this one haven’t given the option to do. This should appeal to a large variety of gamers, giving it a large audience and overall high ratings in various categories.
